01 — o rangrez
o rangrez
o rangrez tere rang dariya mein
doobna hai bas tera ban ke
haaye nahin rehna dooja ban ke
ek bhi saans alag nahin leni
kheench lena praan is tan ke
haaye nahin rehna dooja ban ke
Oh dyer of colours, in the river of your colour I must drown, becoming only yours. Ah, I must not remain, becoming someone else. Not one breath is to be taken apart. Draw out the life of this body. Ah, I must not remain, becoming someone else.
The passage is the request's largest form, and the request is a drowning. Rang dariya, the river of colour, is the dyeing vat raised to the scale of a river, and the drowning is chosen, doobna hai bas. The condition is the passage's power: ek bhi saans alag nahin leni, not one breath apart, and the drawing out of the life, praan kheench lena, is the drowning's completion. The refrain's second half, dooja ban ke, becoming someone else, is the song's fear, and the fear is what the drowning prevents.
